As part of the meeting, Anna Parfitt and Stuart Read conducted a training session on ‘What is the Social Model of Disability?’, where participants discussed the key principles of the social model, which identifies barriers in society as the main obstacle for people with disabilities, rather than their individual characteristics. The training was attended by IUEH Rector Vitalii Demianchuk, Dean of the Faculty of Health, Physicak Culture and Sports Vadym Koval, and lecturers from the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology – Iryna Budz and Alina Kruhliak.
In addition, British colleagues shared their experience of implementing the international project We Are The People, which is a research initiative focusing on inclusiveness and the active participation of people with disabilities in public life. The project has received five years of funding from the Wellcome Trust and includes a series of studies, events and collaborations with local communities, where research and approaches are actively developed together with people with disabilities and their organisations.
As a result of the meeting, participants expressed interest in further cooperation and exchange of best practices, which will contribute to the development of inclusive education and support for the rights of people with disabilities in Ukrainian educational institutions, in particular at IUEH.
